Crisis Pregnancy Centers: spreading misinformation Don't be confused by a fake clinic or "crisis pregnancy center!" Why do we single out LivingWell? Because we believe that everyone is entitled to hear about all of the choices and all the medically accurate facts, without bias or religious slants. LivingWell’s website and the links within do not dispense accepted medical science; their staff and volunteers are required to sign a statement of faith http://www.living-well.org/aboutus.html; one of their representatives stated in a KVMR interview (January 2009) that their clinic does not even dispense condoms. One of their purposes is to prevent abortions, to “preserve the life of the unborn child” (http://www.living-well.org/whoweare.html). Here are some examples of medical inaccuracies: Their website claims that abortion “is a life changing event with significant physical, emotional, and spiritual consequences,” yet an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association states that in from 1979 to 1985, legal abortion was 10 times lower than live births (JAMA ,Vol. 268 No. 22, December 9, 1992, Induced termination of pregnancy before and after Roe v Wade. Trends in the mortality and morbidity of women. Council on Scientific Affairs, AMA, http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/268/22/3231). In August 2008 the American Psychological Association issued a report stating that “…among adult women who have an unplanned pregnancy the relative risk of mental health problems is no greater if they have a single elective first-trimester abortion than if they deliver that pregnancy.” (APA Task Force on Mental Health and Abortion, http://www.apa.org/pi/wpo/mental-health-abortion-report.pdf Their website leads to another site (http://www.abortionfacts.com/literature/literature_928YC.asp) which states medically inaccurate claims such as post-abortion syndrome, something not recognized by either the American Psychological Association or the American Psychiatric Association (APA Task Force on Mental Health and Abortion http://www.apa.org/pi/wpo/mental-health-abortion-report.pdf); a correlation between abortion and breast cancer, proven to be not true by the National Cancer Institute (2003 NCI study Summary Report: Early Reproductive Events and Breast Cancer Workshop, National Cancer Institute, www.nci.nih.gov/cancerinfo/ere-workshop-report). We would like to also reduce abortions by reducing the need for abortions. We do not persuade anyone to have an abortion or to have sex but we do want to see everyone have the access to affordable, confidential family planning services, current medical knowledge, and reproductive healthcare. We give them the options and they make the choice. Please read the article linked above and watch this video presented by RH Reality Check.
