Crisis Pregnancy Centers: spreading misinformation

Don't be confused by a fake clinic or "crisis pregnancy center!"
They are anti-choice organizations, often using inaccurate medical information and coercion. And their staff may not be medical professionals. One of these fake clinics is right here in Nevada County, in Grass Valley - LivingWell. And another in Auburn - New Life Pregnancy Center. Read a short article about it.

Why do we single out LivingWell? Because we believe that everyone is entitled to hear about all of the choices and all the medically accurate facts, without bias or religious slants. LivingWell’s website and the links within do not dispense accepted medical science; their staff and volunteers are required to sign a statement of faith http://www.living-well.org/aboutus.html; one of their representatives stated in a KVMR interview (January 2009) that their clinic does not even dispense condoms. One of their purposes is to prevent abortions, to “preserve the life of the unborn child” (http://www.living-well.org/whoweare.html).

Here are some examples of medical inaccuracies:

Their website claims that abortion “is a life changing event with significant physical, emotional, and spiritual consequences,” yet an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association states that in from 1979 to 1985, legal abortion was 10 times lower than live births (JAMA ,Vol. 268 No. 22, December 9, 1992, Induced termination of pregnancy before and after Roe v Wade. Trends in the mortality and morbidity of women. Council on Scientific Affairs, AMA, http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/268/22/3231). In August 2008 the American Psychological Association issued a report stating that “…among adult women who have an unplanned pregnancy the relative risk of mental health problems is no greater if they have a single elective first-trimester abortion than if they deliver that pregnancy.” (APA Task Force on Mental Health and Abortion, http://www.apa.org/pi/wpo/mental-health-abortion-report.pdf

Their website leads to another site (http://www.abortionfacts.com/literature/literature_928YC.asp) which states medically inaccurate claims such as post-abortion syndrome, something not recognized by either the American Psychological Association or the American Psychiatric Association (APA Task Force on Mental Health and Abortion http://www.apa.org/pi/wpo/mental-health-abortion-report.pdf); a correlation between abortion and breast cancer, proven to be not true by the National Cancer Institute (2003 NCI study Summary Report: Early Reproductive Events and Breast Cancer Workshop, National Cancer Institute, www.nci.nih.gov/cancerinfo/ere-workshop-report).

We would like to also reduce abortions by reducing the need for abortions. We do not persuade anyone to have an abortion or to have sex but we do want to see everyone have the access to affordable, confidential family planning services, current medical knowledge, and reproductive healthcare. We give them the options and they make the choice.

Crisis Pregnancy Clinics and Abstinence Federal Funding: Just say no!
Millions of federal dollars fund failed abstinence-only programs and so-called Crisis Pregnancy Centers or "fake clinics." Congressional studies have shown abstinence only programs don't work and too often lead young people to question the need for contraception.

Crisis Pregnancy Centers, often advertising under "abortion services" in the yellow pages, pose as full-service women's health clinics and lure women in with promises of free pregnancy tests and "counseling" for unintended pregnancies.   Contrary to what they want you to believe, these fake clinics repeatedly make false medical claims to dissuade and delay women from obtaining comprehensive medical services, particularly abortion and birth control.

Join me in telling Congress we will not be silent while failed abstinence-only programs and crisis pregnancy centers continue to use federal funding and endanger women's  health!

Don't be confused by a fake clinic, or "crisis pregnancy centers." They are anti-choice organizations. Watch this video, linked on YouTube, Crisis Pregnancy Centers: A Special Report and read a short article on the local CPC. Some CPCs may be still receiving federal funding - tell Congress to stop federal funding of these fake clinics!
