events

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalition, office 272.2046, crisis line 272.3467, in western Nevada County, will be holding special events throughout the area to bring more awareness about sexual assault and its effects on the lives of survivors and their families. The Clothesline Project, a visual display of shirts decorated to represent a particular woman's experience, by the survivor herself or by someone who cares about her, will be displayed in locations in both Grass Valley and Nevada City, including at Sierra Community College and Bear River High School. Denim Day will be celebrated at Nevada Union High School on April 27. DVSAC will be on KNCO and featured on NCTV.

DVSAC also serves on the committee for the 10th Annual Candlelight Vigil on April 27, held in honor of the victims in our community. Vigil participants will gather at Calahan Park in Nevada City and march to the accompaniment of drummers to the steps of the courthouse. Judge Candice Heidleberger will be the guest speaker. Community members are encouraged to attend the event.

April 27
Denim Day

Denim Day originated in 1999 in protest of an Italian court ruling that overturned a rape conviction on the grounds that the victim was wearing jeans at the time of the assault, and according to the Court's ruling, "It is common knowledge that it is nearly impossible to even partially remove jeans from a person without their cooperation..."  Students and community members are encouraged to wear jeans on this day in solidarity with survivors of rape and sexual abuse all over the world.
